warriors get tough draw, tough day
West was dismantled in their “play-in” wild card game vs. Glendora
(#2 Sierra), 10-1 Tuesday afternoon, ending the 2009 season. As the
strike-zone took on an unconventional shape, Glendora was able to
adjust as the innings wore on. West could only muster 3 hits and
was largely frustrated by the use of the outside corner. Props go
out to Glendora’s ace, Adam Plutko (9-4) for making effective use of
the outer edge. He was rewarded for hitting his spots, striking out
7. Warriors starting Pitcher Sean Wardour (LP 4I, 7R, 3ER, 8H, 1HR,
2K, 1BB, 1HBP) did not have his best movement on the fastball early,
as the Titan hitters led off in the bottom of the 1st
with a single, Sac Bunt, a BB, and 2 singles to take a 1-0 lead.
The Titans added a run when a Wardour fastball passed by C Austin
Watters. Trailing 2-0, West responded in the top of the 2nd
when 2B Michael Schuchard (1-1, 1R, 1 2B, 1BB, 1K) drove a 1 out,
0-1 pitch to right/center for a double. DH Kyle Slowey (0-2, 1BB,
1FC) walked. Watters (1-2, 1RBI, 1K) performed by singling to right
on a hit & run play, scoring Schuchard and moving Slowey to 3B. The
Titans stepped up their defense, getting CF Rashad Johnson (1-3) to
ground into an inning ending 6-4-3 double play. Things looked
ominous with 1 out in the 3rd as Glendora had a run
across on 2 singles and 2 on after their batter was HBP. Wardour
forced the Titans’ RF Wallace Gonzales into a 6-4-3 inning ending
double play, staving off the gloom and doom of a bigger inning and
keeping the game within reach at 3-1. The Warriors were unable
to recover from their lone physical error in the 4th,
however. An in-between high hopper was knocked down but fell at the
feet of SS Tim Smith. Wardour got the next 2 batters on a 1-4 FC,
and 4-3 putout. The error proved costly as the next batter’s RBI
single bounded over 3B Klocek’s head into left. The following
batter’s high chopper over 2B looked like it might yield a force but
both middle fielders played the ball, leaving 2B unattended and the
fielding SS Smith could not beat the runner to the bag. Titans SS
Cody Regis then stroked an opposite field (left) line drive HR,
pushing the score to 7-1. Trevor Neer (2I, 3R, 3ER, 3H, 2HR, 1 HBP)
started the mop up in the 5th, but the Titans kept the pressure on
as their 1st batter was HBP, and RF Gonzales homered.
Their final run occurred in the 6th, on a 2 out solo
homer (Smigelski). Plutko worked well in retiring 9 consecutive
Warriors as the game headed into the 7th. Schuchard Led
off with a walk, but was forced at 2nd on Slowey’s
grounder. PH Andrew Mikolajczyk (0-1) flied to right. SS Tim Smith
(0-1, 2BB, 1K) walked. Johnson could not be caught as his infield
single took the SS towards the 3rd base hole. The game
was ended when LF Shun Tayama’s (0-4) grounder to 2B forced
Johnson. While the 2009 seniors will bid adieu to high school
baseball at the June 2nd banquet, it will be a short
respite for West’s baseball program, as the polymorphisms that
personify high school sports begin to take shape for 2010. The
summer games start June 23.
